Los Llanos de Aridane – The Most Vibrant City on La Palma
Los Llanos de Aridane long ago overtook the capital, Santa Cruz de La Palma, in population and is today the island’s largest town. What at first sounds like a modern administrative centre holds a pleasant surprise: a well-preserved old town with Canarian manor houses, one of the island’s liveliest tapas bar scenes – and, at its heart, a Plaza de España that radiates a calm beneath its mighty laurel trees you wouldn’t expect from a city.

Los Llanos lies in the Aridane Valley in the west of La Palma, nestled between volcanic cones and banana plantations. The town is the starting point for the west coast, for Tazacorte and its harbour, for the Tajogaite lava field and for the access roads into the Caldera de Taburiente. Anyone exploring La Palma from the west cannot avoid Los Llanos.
The Plaza de España
The heart of the old town is the Plaza de España – a traffic-free zone beneath mighty laurel trees whose canopy provides shade even on hot summer days. Cafés, small restaurants and the church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, its portal decorated in Mudéjar style, line the square. Here, local seniors sit and play cards, visitors sip their first barraquito, and virtually every visit to Los Llanos begins.

Directly behind the Plaza de España lies the Plaza Chica – smaller, quieter, with a fountain and boutiques that invite a stroll. Together, the two squares form the social heart of the town and give visitors, within just a few minutes, a sense of what urban life looks like on La Palma.

The Tapas Bar Scene
Los Llanos is the place on La Palma where evening dining and drinking come most alive. The tapas tradition is more vibrant here than in the coastal towns: small bars in the old-town lanes serve papas arrugadas, queso asado, chistorra and mojo in portions you mix and match as you bar-hop. The evening in Los Llanos starts around 8pm and ends whenever it ends.
The lanes around the Plaza de España and Calle Glorieta in particular are lively in the evenings. The market area and its side streets are a reliable spot. Anyone looking for a good guachinche – the Canarian version of a rustic wine tavern, with house wine and simple home cooking – is best off asking a local.
The Historic Argual District: Historic manor houses and Sunday market
A particularly worthwhile detour leads to the historic district of Argual, west of the centre. Here, magnificent manor houses such as the Casa Massieu and the Casa Sotomayor recall the days of the sugar-cane economy and the island’s once-wealthy families.
The town’s most historically significant area lies a short distance from the modern centre, towards Tazacorte: the Plaza Sotomayor. The town’s oldest buildings are grouped around it. The Casa Massieu-Van Dale, once the estate of a sugar baron, today serves as the tourist office and exhibition space. Opposite stands the former Monteverde mansion – now a restaurant with antiques on the walls and dishes still prepared according to old recipes.
Every Sunday morning, the Plaza de Argual turns into a popular market with handicrafts, regional produce, music and traditional trades. The market is one of the most delightful meeting points for visitors wanting to experience authentic La Palma.

Markets and Shopping
The weekly market in Los Llanos is one of the largest on La Palma. Locals and visitors alike shop for fresh produce, flowers and local specialities here.

Practical Tips for Your Visit
Parking in Los Llanos
The historic centre of Los Llanos is largely a pedestrian zone and is best explored on foot. Recommended parking spots are around the bus station (Estación de Guaguas) or central car parks such as the Centro Comercial Trocadero. From there, you can comfortably reach the main sights within a few minutes.
Coffee, Tapas and People-Watching
Los Llanos is the perfect place to observe everyday life on La Palma. Cafés, restaurants, ice-cream parlours and small shops line the Calle Real and the Plaza de España. A break on a sunny terrace is almost part of the experience here – the Canaries have a lovely expression for it: mirar gente, watching people and letting life pass by.
Art in the Open Air
A particular highlight is the project “La Ciudad en el Museo” (CEMAC). Large-format murals by national and international artists are found all over the town centre, turning house façades into a walkable open-air gallery.

The Museo Arqueológico Benahoarita (MAB)
The MAB in Los Llanos de Aridane is the most important archaeological museum in the Canary Islands – and one of the few that truly and comprehensively portrays the world of the pre-Spanish indigenous population. The exhibition combines archaeological finds with reconstructed ways of life: how did the Benahoaritas live? What did they eat, how did they build their homes, how did they organise their society?
The museum is located in the centre of Los Llanos, just a few minutes from the Plaza de España. It is well designed, has multilingual signage and is one of the most visited museums on La Palma. Opening hours: Tue–Sat 10am–8pm, Sun 10am–2pm. Admission approx. €3.
Frida – Falafel in Los Llanos
For anyone wanting to eat vegetarian or vegan: Frida in Los Llanos de Aridane is considered the best address on La Palma for falafel and hummus. The small eatery is unpretentious, affordable and of a quality you wouldn’t expect in a town this size. Among La Palma regulars, Frida is a fixed point – especially for hikers wanting something other than grilled fish after a long day in the Caldera.
Photography Tips: The Most Beautiful Subjects in Los Llanos
The best photo spots are found around the Plaza de España in the morning, when the light falls through the large laurel fig trees and bathes the façades in warm colour. For street photography, a walk through the old town’s side streets is worthwhile, where colourful doors, traditional wooden balconies and the large-format CEMAC murals offer exciting subjects.
