Mountain Biking on La Palma – Extreme Altitude, Extreme Descents

Anyone exploring La Palma by mountain bike should accept one fact before setting out: there are no flat routes on this island. From sea level to 2,426 metres – the entire island is one continuous climb, and if you want to go up, you either pedal or you push. At the top, you’re rewarded with descents that few other terrains in Europe can match.

Mountain biking on La Palma – extreme altitudes with long, technically demanding descents.

La Palma is known among mountain bikers as the most demanding island in the Canaries. Not the most touristy, not the easiest – but the one with the most spectacular trails. For e-bike riders, the island has proven especially rewarding in recent years: the climbs become manageable, while the descents remain just as impressive.

The King’s Descent – Roque de los Muchachos to Tazacorte

2,500 vertical metres of descent in a single run – from the summit of Roque de los Muchachos (2,426 m) down to the harbour at Tazacorte at sea level. Partly on forest tracks, partly on technical trails, through pine forest, heathland and banana plantations – this descent is the benchmark for mountain biking on La Palma. Technically demanding in the upper sections, fast and flowy near the bottom. You’ll need a vehicle waiting at the endpoint, or a guided tour with a transfer.

Trails in the Laurel Forest

In the northeast of the island, around Los Tilos and the Cubo de la Galga, there are trails through the laurel forest with a completely different character from the summit descents: narrow, damp, with roots and rocky sections, surrounded by greenery that seems to glow in the shade. These trails demand technical skill in tight spaces.

Volcanic Landscape in the South

Around Fuencaliente and the San Antonio and Teneguía volcanic craters, tracks cut across black lava fields – a moonscape on two wheels. The surface has good grip, and the views of lighthouses, salt pans and the sea are exceptional.

E-Bike – The Smart Alternative

For anyone who wants to experience La Palma’s best side for mountain biking without pro-level fitness: e-mountain bikes make the extreme climbs accessible. Thanks to its topography, La Palma is ideal for e-bikes – the climbs call for motor-assisted power, while the descents are purely mechanical and just as impressive.

Rules and Safety

Helmets are mandatory outside built-up areas (under Spanish law). Prohibited: the Ruta de los Volcanes (closed to cyclists), and routes inside the Caldera (except the LP-302 up to Los Brecitos). A GPS is essential on unfamiliar trails. Never ride alone in remote areas. Emergency number: 112.

Rules and Prohibitions

Helmet required on all public roads – penalties are strictly enforced.

At night on country roads: reflective clothing required.

Prohibited: Cumbre tunnel, Ruta de los Volcanes, inside the Caldera (except the Los Brecitos approach).

No cycle lanes alongside the roads – watch for oncoming traffic on bends.

Never alone in remote areas – always carry a GPS or offline map.

The Best Routes – From Moderate to Epic

The King’s Tour: Roque de los Muchachos Downhill

Starting at the island’s highest point, 2,426 metres. A downhill run of over 2,500 vertical metres down to the sea at Tazacorte – through technical ridgelines, cloud layers and pine forests. Most riders take the shuttle service (MountainRide or Bike’n’Fun) up and only ride down. That’s not a shortcut – it’s just good sense.

Volcano Tour Along the Cumbre Vieja

Starting in El Paso, heading towards Fuencaliente: through striking lava landscapes and black ash fields. Many tour operators offer a transfer up to Llano del Jable (1,250 m). From there, the route follows the ridge of the Cumbre Vieja – made up of more than 100 volcanoes – all the way to Fuencaliente. The remainder of the ride is a sustained descent. Optional: a detour to the Teneguía and San Antonio volcanoes.

Riverbed Downhill: Barranco de los Hombres

A technical treat for enduro fans: through washed-out riverbeds and over loose volcanic rock. Not for beginners — but for anyone who wants to work on traction across loose terrain, it’s one of the most intense trails on the island.

El Time: Between Almond Trees and Fire Watchtower

Starting point: Tijarafe (670 m). The route climbs between almond trees and pine forest to the high route (around 1,200 m), then follows the ridge to the Torre del Time – the fire watchtower right on the rim of the Caldera. From there it descends to Tazacorte, then a small side road back to Puerto Naos. Moderate difficulty, exceptional scenery.

Northeast Loop: Barlovento and Natural Pools

Starting at the Charco Azul natural pools. The route follows the coast past banana plantations to La Fajana, then climbs steeply up to Barlovento to the Laguna de Barlovento, a water reservoir inside a volcanic crater. The descent returns to Charco Azul. The reward at the end: a second swim stop. Also bookable as an e-bike tour with Su Bici.

Los Brecitos: The Only Permitted Route into the Caldera

From Los Llanos, the route first follows a riverbed, then climbs a gravel track up to Los Brecitos (1,080 m) – the only cycling route officially permitted inside the Caldera de Taburiente. At the top: a one-of-a-kind view into the Caldera. The return follows the same route. Not suitable for regular road bikes – mountain bike or gravel bike only.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is La Palma suitable for road cyclists?

Yes – the ascent to Roque de los Muchachos is considered one of the hardest road cycling climbs in Europe. Over 2,400 meters of elevation with gradients of 10–15% on mostly excellent asphalt. A must for ambitious road cyclists.

Which trails are suitable for beginners?

Beginners are best served by e-bike tours on the west coast – guided half-day tours on paved or lightly graveled paths. The technical trails in the laurel forest and the King’s Downhill are for intermediate and experienced riders.

Road Cycling on La Palma – The Hardest Climb

The climb to Roque de los Muchachos on the LP-4 is considered by road cyclists to be one of the toughest climbs in Europe. Over 2,400 vertical metres, mostly at gradients of 10–15%, on a paved mountain road with essentially no let-up. Anyone who makes it stands on La Palma’s highest point and can claim to have conquered a mountain that starts at sea level. Almost no other climb in Europe offers this complete an elevation profile.

The descent is possible on the same LP-4 – but take care: tight bends, occasional sand on the road, and strong wind on the final 500 metres. Check your brake pads beforehand. If you plan to descend by road bike, tackle the climb in the morning and allow plenty of time for a focused, careful descent.

Transporting a Bicycle to La Palma

Bicycles can be brought to La Palma by plane as oversized baggage (in bike boxes or bags; costs vary by airline, roughly €30–100). Alternatively, Su Bici and other providers offer good-quality rental bikes – for e-bikes, renting is often the more convenient option, since it removes the transport problem entirely.

Conclusion: Cycling on La Palma

Five rental providers, six specific routes, shuttle service to all summits – La Palma is a destination for ambitious bikers.

E-bikes make the extreme climbs accessible. The King’s Tour is the experience you come here for.
