Canyoning on La Palma – Into the Belly of the Island

La Palma is an island of gorges. More than thirty deep barrancos cut through the volcanic rock – from the central ridge down to the ocean. Canyoning here means descending into the heart of the island.

Deep gorges on La Palma – ideal terrain for canyoning and canyon tours

La Palma’s canyons are mostly dry – no flowing water except after heavy rainfall. This makes them accessible most of the year and turns canyoning here into a pure technical adventure: abseiling, scrambling, and leaping into natural basins.

The Best Canyoning Routes

Barranco Fagundo (El Tablado, Garafía)

Barranco Fagundo in the wild north is one of La Palma’s most impressive introductory canyons. Volcanic walls, short abseils, sections of scrambling – technically manageable, scenically spectacular.

The gorge of the Marcos y Cordero springs in the northeast is a completely different canyoning experience: through ancient laurel forest, past thirteen water tunnels, always surrounded by lush green.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is canyoning on La Palma suitable for children?

For children from about 12 years old, depending on physical fitness and with no fear of heights. Entry-level canyons such as the Fagundo are manageable with a good guide. For younger children there are more specifically tailored activities.

What happens when it rains?

Canyoning tours are cancelled during or immediately after rain – the gorges can flood quickly after precipitation. Guides decide on the morning of the tour. Flexible travel planning is recommended.

What Makes Canyoning on La Palma Special

La Palma has almost no canyons with permanent water flow – the gorges are dry for most of the year. This makes canyoning a year-round activity and gives the routes a distinctive character: pure rock, pure technique.

Another advantage of dry canyoning: it is less seasonal than water-filled canyons. From October to May conditions are ideal – temperatures moderate, rock dry.

Combining Canyoning and Hiking

Many canyoning guides on La Palma combine the technical gorge descent with hiking sections – in and out of the canyon. This creates a full-day experience covering very different types of terrain.
