Ron Aldea – La Palma’s Only Sugarcane Rum
In Puerto Espíndola, a small fishing harbour on the northeastern coast of La Palma, the Aldea family has been distilling rum since 1936. Not from molasses – from freshly pressed sugarcane juice, harvested right here on the island.

Ron Aldea is an institution on La Palma and throughout the Canary Islands. In every good Canarian restaurant you’ll find it on the shelf – and at most market stalls at least a bottle of Ron Miel, the honey rum variety.
The Distillery – Visits and Tours
The distillery in Puerto Espíndola offers guided tours covering the entire production process: sugarcane cultivation, pressing, fermentation, distillation and ageing in oak barrels.
Tours should be booked in advance by contacting the distillery directly (+34 922 45 01 93). The visit ends with a tasting of the various Ron Aldea varieties.
Tip for a Perfect Day Trip
Combine a visit to the Ron Aldea distillery with other highlights nearby. Just a few minutes away is Charco Azul – a famous natural sea pool. The rugged northern coastline with its black pebble coves is right nearby.
Ron Aldea – The Product Range
Ron Aldea Blanco: unaged, clear and crisp, with fresh grassy notes – the classic base rum for cocktails. Ron Aldea Añejo: aged in American oak, amber in colour, vanilla and caramel notes. Ron Aldea Extra Añejo: long barrel-aged, complex and round.
Then there is Ron Miel – the semi-sweet honey rum, traditionally drunk after a meal in the Canary Islands. It is made from Ron Aldea Blanco blended with local honey, making it a popular digestif and souvenir.
Puerto Espíndola – The Fishing Harbour
Puerto Espíndola is worth a visit in its own right. The small harbour, home to Mesón del Mar – serving Canarian seafood right by the water – and a black pebble cove at its base make it an ideal lunch stop after the distillery tour.

The History of Rum on La Palma
Rum on La Palma has a long history directly linked to the Caribbean colonial connection. The Indianos – wealthy emigrants who returned from Cuba and Venezuela – brought distillation knowledge back to the island in the 19th century.
The Quevedo Aldea family formalised this tradition from 1936 onwards and developed it into a proper distillery. Today Ron Aldea is exported to several European countries and is La Palma’s best-known culinary product.
